Headline speakers for 2008

Reinhold Messner
Reinhold Messner is often cited as the greatest mountain climber of all time. In 1978 Messner and Peter Habeler were the first to summit Everest without supplemental oxygen and in 1980 Messner repeated this feat solo. He was the first to climb all the world’s fourteen 8,000m peaks, and one of the first and more enthusiastic supporters of alpine style mountaineering in the Himalayas. Other major ascents include the Rupal face of Nanga Parbat with his brother Günther who tragically died on the descent, and a solo of the Diamir face of Nanga Parbat. Kendal is delighted to welcome Reinhold to the Festival, a rare opportunity to hear one of the true greats in the mountaineering world speak about his life and beliefs.

Catherine Destivelle
French climber Catherine Destivelle started climbing in Fontainebleau with her father and soon progressed to the Alps. In the 1980’s she became famous for her successes in the nascent sport climbing movement competing well in the early competitions and climbing classic sport routes such as Chouca 8a+ at Buoux. In 1990 she free-climbed the Nameless Tower in Pakistan and solo climbed the Bonatti Pillar on Les Drus. In June 1991, she opened a new route up the famous west face of the Drus, during a remarkable 11-day solo-climb. She then soloed the Eiger, made winter solos of the North Face of the Grandes Jorasses and the Bonatti route on the North Face of the Matterhorn, attempted Latok in Pakistan and the West Pillar of the Makalu. Catherine became well known to UK audiences from the TV film Seo, with its amazing climbing sequences on cliffs in Mali, West Africa.

David Breashears
David Breashears is an American climber, mountaineer, author and filmmaker. In 1985 he was the first American man to reach the summit of Everest twice and went on to guide Dick Bass on the first ascent of the Seven Summits. Breashears was present on Everest during the 1996 disaster and was made famous by Jon Krakauer’s book Into Thin Air describing how three guides and two clients perished near the summit. He co-directed, co-produced and filmed the 1998 IMAX film ‘Everest’, the footage of which was taken on his 1996 expedition. Breashears has also worked on other films such as Seven Years in Tibet and Cliffhanger, and is the recipient of four Emmy awards for achievement in cinematography.

Steph Davis
American climber Steph Davis is recognised as one of the world’s premier adventure climbers, and one of the few women to have free-climbed El Capitan in Yosemite when in 2005 she climbed the Salathe Wall (VI 5.13b/c). She is also the first woman to climb all seven named summits in the Fitzroy massif. In 2007 she soloed Pervertical Sanctuary (IV 5.10c) on the Diamond, Longs Peak (14,255′) in Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado. Her crack climbing abilities are legendary, and Steph has also recently taken up BASE jumping. She is author of High Infatuation: A Climber’s Guide to Love and Gravity, “partly a history of growing up in the climbing world, partly a book of adventure tales, but mostly an effort to figure out how things fit together”.

High Infatuation: Steph Davis on what’s true..

Steph Davis is considered one of the best climbers in the world.She was the first woman to muscle her way up, without the help of equipment, the Salathe Wall on El Capitan in Yosemite National Park.Davis is the author of High Infatuation: A Climbers Guide to Love and Gravity. It’s a collection of essays and poetry about her life as a climber. We ask a lot of people – including Davis – how she knows what’s true in the world.Steph Davis: I don’t know what’s true in the world. And that’s what I’m always trying to figure out, actually. It’s a great question, because… is reality this thing that I think it is, that’s right in my eyes? Or is it something really different than that?Davis said her experiences as a climber helped push her boundaries.Steph Davis: One example might be just the physical experience that you can have as a climber when you go to do a climb and things build up and kind of grow into more than they were supposed to, and you find yourself, really at the end of your rope, physically, thinking that there’s no way that I can do anymore. But yet, you have to because you have to survive. And then, you find that you are doing more than your body seemed like it should be able to do.

Seven best moments in climbing career:

(I’m not very good with numbers, or with dates…..I started climbing when I was 18, and am 33 now.)

1. When I was about 20, I went climbing at Devil’s Tower in Wyoming. It was the first time leading that I wasn’t scared, and I felt like a huge weight had been lifted from my shoulders. I couldn’t even believe that I had enjoyed climbing in the past, realizing that I had always been held back by fear. This was so different, so much more fun! Wow!, I thought naively, how great that I will never be scared again!! Little did I know…..everything has its cycles, including fear. I feelthat same sense of freedom and true ecstasy whenever I enter the cycle of fearlessness.

2. In 1996, I turned 24. I climbed Tricks are For Kids at Indian Creek, my first 5.13 redpoint, and then almost immediately left for my first trip to Patagonia. It was an exhilarating time.

3. At age 25 I went to Kyrgyzstan. Partly to prove something to myself, I soloed a 30 pitch rock route on a peak there, inventing my rope solo systems and spending a night on the route. For me, that was a really pivotal experience.

4. At age 29, my fifth season in Patagonia, I finally climbed Fitzroy, with a German I met in the base camp. When I returned to the States, Dean and I got engaged and married that summer. That marked the end of expeditions, for some time, and the beginning of intense free climbing focus in Yosemite for the next couple of years. In the past, I had kept switching between expeditions and free climbing at home, and had never been able to consistently improve as a free climber. Marriage marked a change in this routine. It was time to stay in the States, and embrace my husband’s passion for Yosemite.

5. When I was 31, I freed El Cap, and then a month later freed it in a day. I had switched my focus completely to free climbing on El Cap, and for the first time felt the confidence that I could achieve a big free climbing goal if I committed myself.

6. In the winter of the same year, Dean and I went to Patagonia after a two year break from it. Together, we made the first one-day ascent of Torre Egger. We have both spent many seasons in Patagonia, both together and separately, with a lot of effort, success and heartbreak. To make this ascent together really meant a lot to us, as husband and wife and as climbing partners.

7. In 2005, I freed the Salathe Wall on El Cap. For me, that was a dream of a lifetime.

STEPH DAVIS – kobiecy akcent na V KFG

Od wielu lat Steph Davis może być śmiało określana mianem jednej z najwszechstronniejszych wspinających się kobiet świata. Amerykanka ma na koncie trudne drogi skałkowe, również bez asekuracji, ekstremalne klasyczne wielowyciągówki, przejścia solowe – bez i z asekuracją – na długich drogach, przejścia spod znaku speed climbing, niezwykle wartościowe osiągnięcia w Patagonii, Karakorum i na Ziemi Baffina, a nawet… buldery V8 w Hueco Tanks.

Steph zaczęła się wspinać stosunkowo późno, bo w wieku 18 lat. Wcześniej jej wielką pasją była muzyka (naukę gry na fortepianie zaczęła już w wieku 3 lat). „Kiedy nie ćwiczyłam na pianinie, czytałam książki” – w ten sposób Amerykanka wspominała później swoje dzieciństwo spędzone w Maryland. Pierwszy raz dotknęła skały w pobliskim rejonie Carderock i natychmiast poczuła, że wspinanie jest czymś, co daje jej o wiele większą satysfakcję niż muzyka.Pierwsze górskie i wielościanowe szlify zdobywała na ścianie Diamond w Colorado. W ciągu kilku sezonów rozprawiła się z większością klasyków na sztandarowym 300-metrowym urwisku, położonym powyżej 4000 m n.p.m. Na początku kariery, w 1993 roku, przeszła również słynnego Astromana w Yosemite. Później wspominała to przejście jako wielką przygodę: „Byliśmy młodzi i nie mieliśmy specjalnego doświadczenia w Dolinie”. Podobnie jak dla większości amerykańskich wspinaczy, drogi w Dolinie były dla Davis „jazdą obowiązkową” i pod koniec lat dziewięćdziesiątych Steph miała już na koncie nie tylko przejścia klasyków – np. Nosa, Zodiaca (bez młotka) i Rostrum North Face – ale także osiągnięcia stawiające ją w pierwszym szeregu wspinających się pań: onsajt na Crimson Cringe 5.12, przejście w trzeciej próbie Alien 5.12b na Rostrum, Tales of Power 5.12b (w 2 próbie), a także pokonanie Regular Route na Half Dome w 3 godziny 54 minuty (z Deanem Potterem) i zimowe (!) przejście South Seas na El Capie.

W międzyczasie zaczęła być uważana za czołową specjalistkę od wspinania w rysach, co udowodniła chociażby znakomitymi przejściami w Indian Creek, gdzie w 1996 roku zrobiła Ticks Are for Kids 5.13a/b, a dwa lata później pokonała bez asekuracji Coyne Crack 5.11 oraz Scarface 5.11c. Steph dbała również o poziom we wspinaczce sportowej i bulderingu, spędzając część zimy w Hueco Tanks. W mekce amerykańskiego bulderingu zapisała na swoje konto przejścia Double Boiler i Mushroom Roof (obie V 8).

Pod koniec 1996 roku na jej liście obowiązkowych do odwiedzenia w zimie rejonów miejsce Hueco Tanks zastąpiła Patagonia. Na pierwsze dwie wyprawy w rejon Fitz Roya pojechała w towarzystwie Charlie Fowlera. Razem dokonali m.in. przejścia Drogi Pioli na El Mocho (w zespole z Fowlerem pokonała także Hallucinogen Wall VI A3+ w Black Canyon, Colorado). Patagonia jest do dzisiaj jednym z ulubionych rejonów Amerykanki, do którego wracała prawie każdej zimy i w którym zapisała na swoje konto sporo świetnych osiągnięć. Wśród nich wyróżniają się nowe drogi (np. The Potter-Davis Route V 5.11 C1 WI4 na północnej ścianie Poincenot z 2001 roku) oraz skompletowanie wejść na wszystkie siedem szczytów w głównej grani Fitz Roya (zakończone wejściem na Aguja Mermoz drogą Red Pillar w 2002 roku).Pierwsza patagońska wyprawa z zimy 1996/1997 rozpaliła w Steph żądzę zdobywania doświadczeń na wielkich ścianach, położonych w odległych zakątkach świata. Już kilka miesięcy po powrocie z Argentyny Amerykanka wspinała się w Kirgistanie, gdzie w towarzystwie Kennana Harveya dokonała odhaczenia Drogi Francuskiej (5.12a, 15 wyciągów) na Peak 3850 oraz pokonała samotnie pn.-wsch. grań Peak 4520 (V 5.10). Rok później również w towarzystwie ówczesnego partnera życiowego Harveya oraz Seth Saw udała się do Karakorum. Ich celem była Shipton Spire, na której otworzyli pierwszą w znacznej mierze klasyczną drogę Inshallah (5.12 A1). Rok 1999 przyniósł wyprawę na Ziemię Baffina, gdzie w zespole z Russem Mitrovichem i Brandonem Kannierem wytyczyła drogę na dziewiczej i nienazwanej turni, znajdującej się w Fiordzie Gibbs. Wspinacze ochrzcili turnię Jushua Tower, a droga o trudnościachVI 5.11 A4 otrzymała „książkową” nazwę Zen and the Art of Leadership. W 2000 roku Steph wróciła do Karakorum – tym razem do rzadko odwiedzanej Kondus Valley. Celem zespołu, w skład którego wchodzili także Dave Anderson, Jimmy Chin i Brady Robinson stała się dziewicza turnia Tahir Tower. Amerykanie poprowadzili na niej 1100-metrową drogę All Quiet on the Eastern Front VI 5.13 A3.

Jednak największy rozgłos przyniosły Amerykance przejścia klasycznych dróg na El Capitanie w Yosemite. W kwietniu 2004 roku jako pierwsza kobieta przeszła Free Ridera (5.12d, 37 wyciągów), dokonując trzeciego klasycznego przejścia kobiecego ściany (po Lynn Hill i Beth Rodden). Kilka tygodni później wróciła na tę drogę, aby pokonać ją w ciągu jednego dnia (22 godz. 15 min. – drugie jednodniowe klasyczne przejście kobiece ściany). Rok później zrealizowała największe wspinaczkowe marzenie życia, robiąc klasycznie Salathé Wall.

W ciągu ostatnich miesięcy Steph postanowiła zrealizować swoje kolejne marzenia – spróbować swych sił w sky-divingu i skokach B.A.S.E. oraz zakosztować wspinaczki bez asekuracji na długich drogach średniej trudności. Obecnie ma już na koncie ponad 100 skoków oraz świetne „żywce” na ścianie Diamond (przede wszystkim drugie, po Dereku Herseyu, przejście bez asekuracji drogi Pervertical Sanctuary 5.10+, 300 m). Jak widać Amerykanka skutecznie realizuje swoje cele. O tym, co obecnie ma na celowniku, a przede wszystkim o zrealizowanych już zamierzeniach opowie nam w czasie najbliższego KFG.
